Series Session Dates:

Monday May 4, 2021 at 7:30 PM ET — Policy Governance Essentials

Hosted by Ben Sandel and Hether Frayer. Have you heard of Policy Governance but don’t know what it is? Are you part of a co-op or organization that is starting to think about your governance structure? Join us to learn more about a popular and widely used governance system used by cooperatives and other mission-driven organizations.

Monday May 11, 2021 at 7:30 PM ET — Effective Monitoring of Executive Limitations Policies

Hosted by Todd Wallace. In Policy Governance, executive limitations monitoring is a key component of the system, and practicing it well is integral to creating a healthy relationship between the board and GM. In this session we will do a deep dive into the practice and process of executive limitations monitoring, and talk about the capabilities required to do this well.

Note: This workshop assumes a working knowledge of Policy Governance principles or prior experience with the Policy Governance system.

Monday May 18, 2021 at 7:30 PM ET — Policy Governance Puzzles

Hosted by Michael Healy. Building on an understanding of PG gained in sessions 1 and 2 of this series, we will explore some common questions and dilemmas that arise in actual practice. This is an opportunity to build your fluency in using this system so that your board can do great work on behalf of your co-op.

Monday May 25, 2021 at 7:30 PM ET — Governing in Crisis & Change

Hosted by Joshua Youngblood & Thane Joyal. This session will offer tools and experiences from board leaders on guiding their cooperatives through situations presenting challenges with trust, alignment, organizational success, or transformation. We will consider how to apply some guiding principles from Policy Governance and also bring forward wisdom from other sources. Participants will work in small groups with case studies to practice responding to different types of crises and growth inflection points. We will look closely to see what has (and hasn’t) worked, and consider good practices with the values and ideals of our cooperative organizations in mind.

Monday June 1, 2021 at 7:30 PM ET — Meaningful Member Representation

Hosted by Leslie Watson and Michael Healy. Most would agree that meaningful representation of members is critically important to effective cooperative governance. But agreement can quickly turn to confusion when we begin to parse what we actually mean by “representation,” much less what it entails. In the closing session of this series, we will explore this perennially fascinating question together, through a mix of panel and small group discussion.
